Stocks "Surge"!

You might not expect me to comment on the stock market. (Then again, you might!) Actually, the subject is how we talk about things.

“The Dow Jones industrial average surged past its all-time trading high,” said the USA Today news service lead on Tuesday, October 3, 2006. In the languages of stocks, that’s what the Dow does: it “surges.” It also “plunges.”

When it comes to vividness, the language of stocks is like the language of sports. There, teams just don’t “win;” they “pulverize,” “romp” to victory, “squash” the opposition.

So, what does this "surge" look like? As of the closing bell on October 3, the all-time closing high was 11,727.34. That was just 4.36 points above the previous closing high of 11,722.98, on January 14, 2000. This "surge" has reached a level 0.00037 % higher than the previous high of almost six and three quarter years ago. Some surge!
